Failure

August 5, 2012

I fail over and over again; and that is why I succeed – Michael Jordan.

This video galvanises my students. Michael Jordan is one of their heroes and here he celebrates a positive mindset that showcases his commitment to continual learning.

It’s a novel idea for many that the road to success is pitted with failure, especially in a gifted program where students are under considerable pressure to perform.

How else do we learn? I am reminded of Tal Ben-Shahar’s advice in Being Happy where he describes a range of strategies – perfectionism, eating disorders, anxiety, depression, fault-finding – where practised avoidance of failure is far more harmful than the alternative.
